Custom Athletic Mouth Guards

Posted on 10/31/2017 by Dr. Laura Matin
The question that is now being asked “which is the most protective mouth guard we can recommend to our athletes?” The answer is : The one that will be worn, due to precise fit and comfort, and the one that meets the athlete’s specific requirements and considerations.

The following criteria must be taken into account:
•  Age of athlete
•  Sport being played
•  Level of competition
•  Relationship of upper and lower arches
•  Rixed dental prostheses (braced, retainers, space maintainers)
•  Primary versus secondary teeth present
Athletes having dry mouth, tongue space, breathing difficulties, gag reflex
•  Prior history of head injury.

We cannot expect an over-the counter, one size-fits-all mouth guard to meet the above demands.

The American Dental Association reported the reduction of football skull /facial injuries from 50% to less than 1% after the requirement of face guards and mouth guards. Flanders and Mchandas in 1995 reported that in basketball, where no head protection or mouth guards are worn, there was an there was an orofacial injury rate of 34%.

When a properly fitted custom made, mouth guard is worn, the force of an impact to the teeth , jaw and the base of the skull is reduced. The most important value of the mouth guard is the concussion saving effect following impact to the lower jaw. This fact alone should make the wearing of mouth guards compulsory in all contact sports.

There are 3 basic types of athletic mouth guards available.

Stock.

There are store bought over the counter mouth guards. You simply take them out of the bag, with no attempt at an individual fit. These are the least protective of all types and the least expensive.

Boil and Bite.

These are also store-bought over-the counter guards. The instability and uneven distribution of material do not lend themselves to proper fit and protection.

Custom Made.

These are the mouth guards of choice for the health professional to recommend to our patients.

At Dr. Matin’s office, we only want the best. After considerable research, the conclusion is that the custom athletic night guard is the only way to achieve the safest ,and most comfortable appliance available. Please ask us any questions you may have!
