Natural-Looking / Metal-Free White Fillings

Do you need to get a cavity filled but don't feel enthusiastic about having a gray metal lump in your mouth? Perhaps you already have several old metal fillings and would like to replace them with smooth white fillings?

Metal-free fillings, also known as composite fillings and white fillings, are an alternative to the traditional metal amalgam fillings.

They consist of white dental bonding instead of the mix of mercury and other elements that has been used in the past. Silver is one of them, and the term "silver fillings" is often used for metal amalgam fillings. But they also contain copper, tin, and zinc.

Potential harm from mercury in fillings

Many studies have been done on the effects of mercury in metal fillings, and many more are in progress. It's thought by some that mercury in fillings gives off mercury vapor, which is absorbed easily by the body. Some studies have connected mercury with Alzheimer's Disease. Some have shown that mercury in a mother's body is transmitted to her baby. The controversy is ongoing.

Other disadvantages of metal fillings:

•  They don't resemble our natural teeth.
•  They're not bonded to the tooth, and can therefore become loose after a while, and even fall out.
•  Instead of being bonded to the tooth, they're packed into the cavity, which means some of the tooth's healthy tissue must be drilled away to shape that cavity so that it will securely hold the filling.

The metal conducts heat and cold more than white composite fillings, making your tooth more sensitive.

Advantages of white fillings

•  Dr. Matin will match the composite material to your natural teeth, so the filling will be smooth and unnoticeable.
•  Composite fillings are bonded to your tooth, so that they're part of the tooth and will never become loose or fall off.
•  They provide a strong chewing surface for back teeth
•  They give a pleasing white finish for front teeth

If you suspect you have a cavity, i.e., you have tooth pain, especially when exposed to cold, don't delay in having it treated. Left untreated, cavities can not only cause a great deal of pain but also increase your risk of infection, gum disease, and tooth and bone loss.
